You might be wondering, what does "functional" really even mean? To be honest, I was wondering this myself for years and wasn’t sure I really even believed the explanation when I heard it. But now that I understand more, I wholeheartedly believe in the “functional” food we consume and the activities in which we partake. The functional part is all about choosing foods and exercises that serve a purpose beyond just satisfying hunger or burning calories.

Functional foods and exercises are like supercharged power-ups for our bodies, providing essential nutrients and movements that support our overall health and well-being.

Functional Foods:

When it comes to food, think of functional options as those that offer more than just flavor – they're packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds that nourish and energize us from the inside out. Instead of just focusing on isolated muscle groups, functional exercises engage multiple muscle groups and challenge our balance and coordination. For example, I take a Barre 3 class every day where we do a ton squats, lunges, and planks. These types of movements are critical to do (often) because we do a lot of activities that require these muscles and positions such as hauling groceries out of the car, carrying our pets around, cleaning under the couches, etc.

So, why is it important to prioritize functional foods and exercise? Because they empower us to live our best lives every single day. Functional foods fuel our bodies with the nutrients we need to thrive, while functional exercises keep us strong, agile, and ready to tackle whatever life throws our way.
